It is an Indian breed of chicken called Kali Masi and as "fowl having black flesh".It is mostly found in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The birds can survive well in hot climatic conditions and harsh environments. The local people like rural poor, tribals, and Adivasis breed the bird more. Kadaknath is famous for black chicken with black meat and bones. The chickens breed body parts like its legs, toenails, tongue, comb, and wattles, beak, bones, meat, and even the internal organs are dark in colour. This black colour is due to the presence of melanin. The Kadaknath is considered a sacred bird, so after Diwali, it is sacrificed to the Goddess. The three varieties within the breed are jet black, golden, and pencilled. The breed's meat fat content is very low, only 0.73–1.03% compared to the 13–25% of most other chicken breeds. On 30 July 2018, the Indian government approved the meat from this breed and gave geographical indication (GI Tag).
