Hint :IUPAC means International union of standard and applied chemistry, it is a world recognized method of naming any element. As per IUPAC rules any element is given a chemical name which can be read and recognized by anyone around the world. Based on number of parent atoms, double bonds, functional group, etc these names are decided
Complete Step By Step Answer:
As per IUPAC the number of carbon atoms present in the element is called the parent chain. Given suffix represents the functional group present on the parent chain. Substituents are other groups present in the parent chain. The formula for acetylacetone is $ C{H_3}COC{H_2}COC{H_3} $ , here as we can see there are $ 5 $ carbon atoms which means this belongs to the pent group. There is no double bond on the parent chain and hence they belong to the alkane group giving it the combined name pentane. Since there are $ 2 $ ketones groups present they will be called diketones. Now as observed in the formula the ketone groups are present on the $ 2 $ and $ 4 $ carbon giving it the name pentane - $ 2 $ , $ 4 $ -. Now since there is a $ 2 $ ketone group present it will be called dione. All combined together will be called pentane - $ 2 $ , $ 4 $ - dione.
Option B , pentane - $ 2 $ , $ 4 $ - dione.
Note :
There are many exceptions that don’t follow the IUPAC rule. Acetyl acetone is used as an anti corrosive agent it is also used as an analysis reagent. Pharmaceutical and organic intermediates use it as a raw material .
