First of all, let’s discuss what an atom is. An atom is the smallest particle of an element and it consists of a large solid mass in its center known as the nucleus of the atom.
The nucleus of the atom consists of the positively charged particles i.e. the protons and the neutral particles known as the protons. Outside the nucleus are the negatively charged particles i.e. electrons which keep on revolving around the nucleus in fixed circular orbits.

Isotopes are the substances may be elements or the compounds which have the same atomic number but different mass number.
In simple words, we can say that they have the same number of the protons inside the nucleus but different numbers of the neutrons present inside the nucleus.
Hence, isotopes of a given element have both the positively charged particles as well as the neutral particles but the number of neutral particles is more than the positively charged particles.
