Hint: Dimples are small dents that can be found on the skin, occurring commonly on the cheeks, chin and lower back. Cheek’s dimples become prominent while smiling or talking and are present on both the cheeks or only on one cheek. Chin dimples are present on the chin and are singular. Over the lower back, on either side of the spine, lower back dimples are present. 20-30 % of the world’s population has dimples which make them quite rare. In many cultures, dimples are a sign of beauty, youth, and luck. Many people desire dimples on their faces.

Complete answer:
Most people do not know that dimples are actually genetic defects. Cause of dimple formation is a developmental variation in the facial muscle called the zygomaticus major. This zygomaticus major muscle is involved in the facial expressions and helps the corners of the mouth lift while smiling. Normally, the zygomaticus major muscle begins at the cheekbones, also called the zygomatic bone, and ends at the corner of the mouth.
In people having dimples, the zygomaticus major typically divides into two separate bundles of muscle (also called a bifid zygomaticus major), namely, one is attached to the corner of the mouth and the other is attached below the corner of the mouth and to the skin above the corner of the mouth. This split in the muscle is referred to as a double or bifid zygomaticus major muscle.
Dimple is not visible or seen when the muscle is at rest. When we smile, movement of skin over the bifid zygomaticus major muscle causes a dimple to form. People, there can be variations in how their dimples appear and may also become more prominent with age.
Sometimes, dimples can also be caused by the accumulation of excessive fats on the face. This type of dimple vanishes when the excessive fat is burnt off but it is not an indicator of good health and can be eliminated through proper diet and exercise.
Despite being a genetic disorder, there are no negative effects of having dimples.

Note:
Dimples are hereditary and it is a dominant trait which means that when either of the parents has dimples it is more likely that it would be passed to the child. Sometimes, it doesn’t appear at the time of birth, but it becomes visible later in life. Dimple wouldn’t be present in the child if it is absent in both the parents; it will be only present when the child experiences a spontaneous mutation. This genetic malformation is greatly admired by people of all ages. Fans of this dent have tried to use makeup to create an impression of dimples. Some even tried plastic surgery. So, we can conclude that some defects are blessings in disguise.
