ICJ headquarter is located in Hague, Netherlands and is sometimes called the World Court which is led by a total no of 15 judges with each judge having a tenure of 9 years. The major need for establishment of this court was to solve the international dispute which was felt in the 1st Hague Conference.
Functions- Its primary function is to settle international legal disputes submitted by states (controversial cases) and consults and gives advice on legal issues referred to it by the UN .It serves as a source of international law by its opinions and ruling. It can enact two types of ruling which are contentious issues and advisory opinions. It solves the contentious issues which relate to the issues among the states only.
The International Court of Justice has no machinery to compel the parties to follow its order.
There are five seats for Western Countries, three seats for the African states, two for Eastern Europe states, and three for the Asian States and two for Latin America and Caribbean States. Two judges can’t be nationals of the same country as they are chosen to represent all regions of the world globally so as to maintain an informal understanding between the nations.
