The Indian National Defense University was established in the year 2013 by the Ministry of Defence at Binola village in Gurugram earlier known as Gurgaon district of Haryana. The area of the University is 200 acres and has been proposed to be one the Institutes of National Importance. It is situated on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, NH 48.
The idea for the establishment of the institution was recommended by the Sethna Committee in the year 1980 and was approved by the Union Cabinet in the year 2010. It was launched by the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 23rd May 2013.
The objective of the University are:-
To promote a research-oriented National Defence Policy.
To develop leaders of high level of officers for performing military functions and formulation of the policy.
To generate higher education in defense studies such as defense management and defence science and technology.
To create University think tanks to provide policy formulation inputs.
The affiliated colleges of the Indian Armed Forces include:-
College of Defence Management in Secunderabad, Telangana
Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, Tamil Nadu.
National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Maharashtra and
National Defence College in New Delhi.
Note:It has been decided to admit 66% of students from the Indian Armed Forces and the remaining 33% from the Parliamentary Forces of India, Police in India and the Civilians.
It will include Doctoral, Post-Doctoral Research, Postgraduate and Higher Studies through distance mode.
There will also be inclusion of War and Peace Courses.
