On 16 July 1929, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was established under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, as a registered society. It recently celebrated the 92nd day of its founding on 16 July 2020.

It is headquartered at New Delhi. It has four regional offices, located at New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore. ICAR is one of the largest national agricultural systems in the world. It has 102 ICAR institutes and 71 agricultural Universities across the country.

ICAR is the country's supreme body for direction, coordination and management of agricultural research and education, including horticulture, fisheries, and animal sciences.

 The ICAR played a major role in initiating the Green Revolution. Through its agricultural research and technology development, India has increased food grain production by 5.6 times, horticultural crops by 10.5 times, fish by 16.8 times, milk by 10.4 times and eggs by 52.9 times since 1950-55.
