Hint: A nuclear power plant converts heat energy into nuclear energy like a thermal power plant but the heat source in a nuclear power plant is a nuclear reactor. According to the reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency, there are 450 power reactors in operation in 30 countries as of 2018. Nuclear power is the fifth-largest source of electricity in India after coal, gas, hydroelectricity and wind power. The Narora Atomic power station in India has a capacity of 440 MW.

Complete answer: The Narora Atomic power station is located in Bulandshahr district in Uttar Pradesh, India. It has two reactors each capable of producing 220 MW of electricity. In 1993, two years after the functioning started in the plant, a turbine malfunction caused a major fire and almost led to a nuclear meltdown. Other nuclear power plants near the one in Narora included the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan and Gorakhpur Nuclear Power Plant in Fatehabad district of Haryana.

Note: There are a total of 22 nuclear reactors in operation 7 nuclear power plants in India, the total capacity of which amounts to 6780 MW and accounts for 3.2% of supplied electricity in India. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is a public sector undertaking of the Government of India created in 1987 which is responsible for the generation of nuclear power in India. It is also closely administered by the Department of Atomic Energy.
