Seasonal variations in temperature and precipitation occur due to the effect of the Earth revolving around the Sun. Even there are wide differences in temperature if we compare the average temperatures of January and July. In January, lowest temperatures are recorded at northern continents while the warmest areas are the landmasses of the Southern Hemisphere, particularly South Africa and Australia.

Rainfall also varies with the seasons. The highest rainfall occurs near the equator where convection takes place. It is observed that tropical countries witness heavy showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons. At high latitudes where the rate of precipitation is very low, subtropical high-pressure regions also have low rainfall.

Another important role in determining the seasonal contrasts is played by the ocean currents. Oceans play an important role in storing heat. The horizontal currents moving north or south, carry warmed or cooled water and the displaced water can then warm or cool the air indirectly, the land over which this air blows. Therefore, the coastal regions get profit from their moderating influence, while the interiors of the continents experience more sudden seasonal changes.

Note: Climatic variations occur from place to place due to the different amounts of radiation received from the Sun at different parts of the Earth at different times of the year.
