Option C – The Simlipal Biosphere is situated in the Mayurbhanj district of the state Orissa. It was established in the year 1980 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Earlier this reserve was known as Simlipal elephant reserve for the purpose of hunting ground for royalty. In the year 1956 it was named as a Tiger Reserve and was also included in Project Tiger in the year 1973 in May. The area of the reserve is 2750 kilometers, i.e. 1060 square miles with a height of 559.31 metres, i.e. 1835 feet. It is considered to be a part of Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve which is divided into three protected areas namely Simlipal Tiger Reserve, Hadagarh Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary.
The tiger reserve is a home to some of the major mammals such as Bengal tigers, Asian Elephant, Gaur, leopard, sambar, barking deer and Chausingha etc. The park consists of 42 species of mammals, 242 species of birds and 30 species of reptiles. It also consists of 1076 species of plants as well and 96 species of orchids.
