With exception of the fertile area on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlas Mountains of the Maghreb, and the Nile Valley in Egypt and Sudan, the desert comprises almost all of North Africa. It extends from the east of the Red Sea and the north of the Mediterranean to the west of the Atlantic Ocean, where the terrain is gradually switching from desert to coastal plains.
This Sahara Desert is located on the African continent. It is bordered to the south by the Sahel, a region of semi-arid tropical savannah across the valley of the Niger River and the Sub-Saharan African Sudan Area. The Sahara, such as Western Sahara, the central Ahaggar Mountains, the Tibesti Mountains, the Aïr Mountains, the Ténéré desert, and the Libyan Desert, can be divided into several areas.
It occupies 3,500,000 sq mi (9 million square kilometers), comprising 31% of Africa. The Sahara would be 11 million square kilometers (4,200,000 sq mi) if all areas with an average precipitation of less than 250 mm will be included.
