The original Fort William was built by the British East India Company under the supervision of Sir John Goldsborough in 1696 after Mughal emperor Aurangazeb gave the permission. After the Battle of Plassey,Robert Clive started to rebuild the fort in 1758. The area was cleared and the Maidan provided a fresh breath to Calcutta.
Fort William is the property of the Indian Army today. The Eastern Command’s headquarters are located here which accommodates 10,000 army personnel. The fort is named after King William III.
