# In an examination 2500 students appeared out of which 1100 were girls. 50% of the boys and 40% of the girls passed the examination. What percentage of the candidates failed in the examination ?

Hint: In total 2500 students are there including total number of boys and girls. So first we will find out the number of boys and girls respectively. Then we will find out the number of boys and girls passed in the examination. After that we will find out candidates failed in examinations and percentage of it.

Given number of girls = 1100
Total students = 2500
So we have to find out number of boys = total students – number of girls
= 2500 – 1100
Therefore, Number of boys = 1400
Its mentioned 50 % of boys passed examination
Therefore , number of boys who passed examination is 50 % of 1400
$\dfrac{{50}}{{100}}\, \times \,1400$= 700 boys
number of girls who passed examination is 40 % of total girls
40 % of 1100
$\dfrac{{40}}{{100}}\, \times \,1100$= 440 girls
Total number of students who passed this examination is = 700 + 440= 1140
1140 students passed this examination
We will find the number of students who failed in this examination = total students – number of students who passed this examination .
= 2500 – 1140
= 1360 students
Percentage of candidates who failed is
= $\dfrac{{number\,of\,failed\,candidates}}{{total\,number\,of\,students}}\, \times \,100\%$
= $\dfrac{{1360}}{{2500}}\, \times \,100\,\%$
=$54.4 %$

Therefore the percentage of students who failed in this examination is 54.4%.

Note: If it is asked 50% of any number or any data simply divide the number by 2 because $\dfrac{{50}}{{100}}\,of\,any\,number\, = \,\dfrac{1}{2}\,of\,that\,number$.
Don’t get confused with 50% of boys and 40 % of girls you have to find that separately. If you will find it on the whole as a percentage of 2500. It’s wrong all your calculation will be wrong .
