Hint: The Vijayanagar kingdom existed in the Deccan plateau in Southern India. It was founded in 1336. It lasted for around three hundred years. Harihara I and Bukka Raya who were two brothers founded this kingdom. The capital of Vijayanagar is Hampi which today is in Karnataka. The name Vijayanagar means the ‘city of victory’. Vijayanagar was the first Indian state to have achieved cultural and political unity. The administration of the kingdom had a high degree of centralisation. The Vijayanagar empire had four castes: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishays and the Shudras. A large number of women worked in the palaces as domestic workers, palanquin bearers and dancers. Although the rulers were mainly from Hindu religion, they were more or less tolerant towards other religions.
