Complete answer: The First war of Independence of India was in 1857. This event was not a full war, but a major uprising or rebellion which occurred from 1857 till 1858 in the form of different events in different parts of the country. It is also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
The causes leading up to the events were many but the immediate cause of the rebellion was the incident with the Enfield rifles. The sepoys were Indian soldiers working for the British army. The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifled muskets which were introduced in that year were different from the earlier muskets as they used paper cartridges. These cartridges were pre-greased and had to be bitten off to load them. Soon, there were rumours that the cartridges were greased with the fat of cows and pigs. This offended both the Hindus and the Muslims which sparked off a mutiny.
The immediate incident of the sepoys rebelling was dealt with and suppressed but it sparked outrage and disquiet among the natives and the various nobles. The nobilities who had lost their holdings and the general public who were unhappy all rallied together.
The uprising was inspiring, but ultimately unsuccessful due to the lack of coordination and centralized leadership.

Note: -It is also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, Indian Mutiny, Indian Insurrection etc.
-The rebels had declared Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last descendent from the Mughal lineage as their king.
-Leaders like Tantiya Tope, Nana Sahib and Rani Lakshmibai became popular leaders who strongly fought against the British.
-Due to this incident, the East India Company was dissolved and the Indian administration passed directly to the British throne.
-The Government of India Act of 1858 was passed by Queen Victoria to placate the citizens of India.
