If the President of India wants to resign from his office, he may resign by writing to the Vice President of India. Article 56 of the Indian constitution provides that the term of President may terminate earlier on either of the following conditions:
By the impeachment process
Resignation by addressing to the Vice President of India
If the President is charged with violation of the constitution, he may be removed from his office by the process of impeachment in the manner which is provided under Article 61. The Supreme Court can remove the president for the electoral malpractices under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Resolution to impeach the President has to be passed by a 3/3rd majority of the total number of members of either of the houses. In this case, the President has the right to defend himself through an authorised counsel. If the second house also approves the charges put forth by the majority, the President stands impeached. He is then deemed to have vacated their office from the date when such a resolution is passed.
