A company originally named Hindustan Aircraft Limited was set up in Bangalore on 23 Dec 1940 by Shri Walchand Hirachand, a remote consultant, working with the then Mysore Government, for the purpose of making aircrafts in India. In March 1941, the Indian Government became one of the Company's shareholders and subsequently took over in 1942. In partnership with the Inter Continental Aircraft Company of the USA, the Company started its production business with Harlow Trainer, C Curtiss Hawk Fighter and Vultee Bomber Aircraft. In January 1951, the control of Hindustan Aircraft Limited was handed over to the Department of Defense, Government of India, and in August 1963, Aeronautics India Limited (AIL) was incorporated as a wholly owned subsidiary of India, making MiG-21 aircraft under license. By an Amalgamation order issued by the Indian Government Aircraft Limited and Aeronautics India Limited were merged on 1 October, and the Company after its merger was renamed as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and its main business became design, development, manufacture, maintenance and repair of aircraft, helicopters back, engines and related systems such as avionics, metals and other equipment.
