Hint:
> Hidkal Dam was built around the Dhupdal weir, which is a 70 km-long canal.
> Hidkal Dam is a hydroelectric and irrigation dam.

Complete answer:
The Hidkal Dam started operations in 1977. Its name is taken from the name of the Hidkal village in North Karnataka, India. The dam is an earthen and masonry dam and it caters the irrigation water supply for over 8,20,000 acres of farmland. It also produces hydel power electricity. It was part of a larger irrigation project which took three phases to complete. It has Vertical Crest Gates and the dam reservoir has a storage facility of 51.16 tmcft. Let us now see which river is this dam built on-

A. The Hidkal dam is not built on the Krishna River. Though it is in the Krishna river basin area, the dam is built on of the tributaries of it. Therefore, this is not the correct answer.

B. The Hidkal dam is not built on the Cauvery river either. The Cauvery River has four dams- the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, the Kabini dam, the Harangi dam and the Hemvathi dam. So, this is not the correct answer.

C. The Hidkal Dam is not built on the Pennar river. The Pennar River has the Sathnur Dam built on it. Therefore, this too is not the correct answer.

D. The Hidkal dam is built on the Ghatprabha river. It is a part of the Ghatprabha irrigation project which was finally completed in the year 2009. Therefore, this is the correct answer.

Therefore, the correct answer is D

Note:
> The Hidkal dam is also known as the Raja Lakhamagouda dam, after the zamindars and philanthropist of Vantamuri.
> The Hunnur Inspection Bungalow and Hunnur Fort are attractions of Hidkal.
> The Cauvery river is embroiled in water disputes between neighbouring states for many years now.
> The Pennar river also has two smaller dams- the Krishnagiri and the Kelavarapalli dams.
Ghatprabha dam creates the Raja Lakhamagouda reservoir.
