Hint: Vapor pressure of a substance is nothing but the tendency of the compound to convert into gaseous state from the liquid state at the given conditions. The vapor pressure of the water is going to depend on the substance which we are going to add to it.
Complete Solution :
- In the question it is given that when a tablespoon of sugar is added to water what happens to the vapor pressure of the water.
- We can say that here water is the solvent and a tablespoon of sugar is solute.
- We know that sugar is a non-volatile solute.
- When sugar is added to the water the vapor pressure of the water decreases because non-volatile solute makes the solvent to not evaporate at a lesser temperature when compared to normal solvent.
- That means the vapor pressure of the water after adding sugar is going to decrease.
- The vapor pressure of the solvent is going to depend on the type of the solute we are going to add to the solvent.
Note: If we are going to add a non-volatile solute to the solvent then the solution shows a decrease in vapor pressure of the solvent. Because the non-volatile solute makes the solvent to not evaporate at normal temperature. Then the solution shows a decrease in vapor pressure of the water when compared to the pure solvent.
