Hint: Solids, liquids and gases are the three phases of matter. When a substance undergoes a phase change from solid to liquid, liquid to gas or gas to solid there is no change in kinetic energy and hence there is no change in temperature.
Complete answer:
Matter is any substance that can occupy a space and has mass. This matter is divided into three phases. When a substance undergoes a phase change from one phase to another phase like solid to liquid, liquid to gas or gas to solid. This phase change occurs only when the heat energy is supplied to the substance.
Thus, when heat is supplied to any substance like ice, it starts to melt by absorbing the heat energy and undergoes a phase change from solid to liquid. More amount of heat energy is given then the liquid undergoes a phase change to gas.
The heat energy given is used to undergo a phase change but not for the increase in kinetic energy of the molecules in the substance. Thus, the kinetic energy remains the same. It leads to no change in temperature.
There is no change in temperature during a phase change.
Note:
The heat energy supplied to the substance is utilized to separate the molecules. But there is no change in kinetic energy. After a phase change, there may be a change in temperature. But there is no change in temperature of a substance during a phase energy.
