Poland in \[1980\] was ruled by the communist Polish United Workers Party. No other party in the country was allowed to function. People were restricted to choose leaders and those who went against the government were jailed. Poland was supported by the USSR, a very big powerful communist party. On the \[14th\] of august, \[1980\] workers in Lenin shipyard in the city of Gdansk went on strike demanding to take back the crane operator, also a woman worker was dismissed unfairly.
Lech Walesa, an electrician who was dismissed unfairly in \[1976\] for high pay demanded to join the strike. The strike began to spread around the city. Then the government agreed to give workers the right to form trade unions and the right to strike. The government finally gave in. After the Gdansk agreement, a new trade union was formed named Solidarity, the first time in communist states union had formed. The government which was being led by General Jaruzelski, in \[1981\] imposed martial law. Thousands of members of the Solidarity union were jailed. Solidarity yet again organized the strikes in\[1988\] , the support from the Soviet Union was weak the government had to give in and also the economy was in decline.

Note: Poland elected Walesa as their president. In \[1989\] April free elections were agreed upon. Solidarity won \[99\] out of \[100\] Senate seats.
