Complete answer:
In the South Indian state of Karnataka, Hampi is an ancient village. Hampi is famous for its ruins belonging to the erstwhile medieval Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar and it is declared as a world Heritage site. Because of their outstanding workmanship, the temples of Hampi, their sculptures and monuments, attract the traveller.

Hampi is famous for its temples which are dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, a form of Shiva. Lakkan Dandesha, a nayaka, constructed the temple.

In 1800, it was Colin Mackenzie who found the Hampi’s ruins. Many of the ruins still remain today, and Hampi was formally designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1986.

According to history, at the fateful battle of Talikota on January 26, 1565, the town of Vijayanagar was destroyed over a period of five months after the defeat of its army. Thus, Hampi was the capital of Vijayanagar.
