Gold is a chemical element in the periodic table which is represented by the symbol Au and its atomic number is 79. The pure form of gold is bright, reddish yellow in color. It is malleable and ductile in nature. It is unreactive in nature and due to its properties it is used in making ornaments and jewellery.
The gold which is used for making jewellery are of different composition. Mostly 24K, 22k and 18k gold are used to make jewellery. 24K are the pure form of gold which does not contain any other metal component. The 24k gold is more expensive as compared to 22k gold and 18k gold.
The 22k gold is also known as ornamental gold. The ornamental gold is composed of a mixture of gold and copper metal. The ratio of the gold and copper metal in the ornamental gold is uniform through-out the composition which means that the copper and gold are mixed so well with each other they cannot be distinguished from the naked eye. Therefore, the ornamental gold is considered as a homogeneous mixture.

Note: As 24 karat gold is pure form of gold they are very soft thus used to make coins, bars and in electronic devices. 22 karat gold is used for making jwelleries. The other elements mixed with gold make it hard and durable.
