Hint: As we know that sulphur is having the symbol S, which is crystalline solid at room temperature, tasteless, odourless and is bright yellow in colour. It is found that sulphur is having lower reactivity than that of chlorine atom.
Complete answer:
- No gas is released when sulphur is added to dilute HCl. This is because chlorine is more reactive than that of sulphur.
- As we know that in the reactivity table, sulphur is present much below chlorine. And hence cannot displace chlorine from dil HCl.
- Basically, as chlorine is more reactive than sulphur, so it does not allow sulphur to replace it from the compound.
- We can see that when sulphur is added to dilute HCl, there is no reaction. And hence there is no product formation taking place.
- Or we can say that sulphur does not have the capability to replace chlorine from hydrogen gas.
- Hence, we can conclude that as chlorine is more reactive than that of sulphur, that is why no gas is released when sulphur is added to dilute HCl.
Note: - As we know that Chlorine is more reactive than that of sulphur. This is because chlorine only needs to lose one electron to make it stable, whereas sulphur needs to lose two electrons to become stable.
- Sulphur doesn’t react with gold and platinum.
