Hint: Plastic is defined as a polymer of long carbon chains. The word plastic was derived from the word ‘Plastikos’ meaning ‘to mould’ in Greek. It was discovered by famous German chemist Christian Schonbein in $1846$.They are poor conductors of heat and electricity but are strong and ductile.

Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular masses. They are usually synthetic .Depending on the physical properties, plastics are divided into two types:
Thermoplastic- Plastics that can be deformed easily upon heating and can be bent easily. Examples of thermoplastics are PVC, nylon, polythene.
Thermosetting- Plastics that cannot be softened again by heating once they are moulded. Examples are Bakelite, melamine etc. Bakelite is used for making electrical switches and melamine is used for floor tiles.
Now, plastics are non-corrosive in nature and they do not react even if they come in contact with strong chemicals. Few examples are listed below:
They are used to store chemicals.
They are used to store all types of food, as it does not react to materials stored in it.
Hence, plastics are non corrosive in nature.

Plastics are non-biodegradable and they do not get decomposed by the microbial action. Further, the recycling of plastics is very important. If they are not recycled at proper time, then they get mixed with other chemicals or materials and hence it becomes more difficult to recycle them and they further become a source of pollution.
