Give a brief description on the process of synthesis of food in green plants.

Hint: The process of food synthesis occurs in the cells containing green pigment called chlorophyll. Raw materials required for the process of food synthesis are water, carbon dioxide and sunlight. Water present in the soil is transported to the leaves through absorption by the roots. Stomata present on the leaf surface takes carbon dioxide from air.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food. Chlorophyll is the pigment present in the leaves of all green plants which helps in absorption of energy. Green plants perform photosynthesis only through leaves.

Various steps involved in the photosynthesis are:-
- Absorption of energy by chlorophyll through the sun.
- Splitting of water molecules into two components: hydrogen and oxygen.
- Carbon dioxide is reduced into glucose (carbohydrate) by light energy using hydrogen and oxygen produced from water.
- Reaction of photosynthesis:
\[6C{O_2} + 6{H_2}O \to {C_6}{H_{12}}{O_6} + 6{O_2}\]

- The first and simple food prepared by the process of photosynthesis is Glucose. Final products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen. Starch (polymeric carbohydrate) consists of large number glucose units. Starch acts as stored energy in plants. During photosynthesis plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

Note: Food provides energy and essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water for the growth of the body. Food is also required by human beings for repairmen of damaged and worn out cells.
