Hint:Epithelial tissue is protective tissue. It forms a continuous sheet on both external & internal body surface and body organs.
Cuboidal epithelial tissue present in kidney tubules, salivary glands. It provides mechanical support.
Complete answer:
Epithelial tissue is composed of one or more layers of cells that cover the external & internal body surface.
They covered the exposed surface of body parts so they are also called covering tissue.
Epithelial tissue may be classified on the basis of cell shape and on the basis of the number of cell layers.
Epithelial Tissue are of two types
a)Based on cell shape
>Squamous epithelium
>Cuboidal epithelium
>Columnar epithelium
>Ciliated epithelium
>Glandular epithelium
b)Based on number of cell layers
>Simple epithelium
>Striated epithelium
Cuboidal epithelium tissue:
In cuboidal epithelium, the shape of a cell is cube-like with equal height & width.
In surface view, the cells look polygonal in shape.
Nuclei of cuboidal cells lie in the Centre and are rounded in shape.
Microvilli are present on their free surface; they give a brush-like appearance to their free border called brush bordered cuboidal epithelium.
The function of microvilli is to increase the absorptive surface area.
Location: It is present in the small salivary & pancreatic ducts, thyroid follicles, proximal and distal convoluted tubules of kidney, ovaries and seminiferous tubules of testes.
It is also present in the inner surface of the lens, pigment cell layer of the retina of the eye and sweat gland of mammalian skin.
Note:Mechanical Support: It provides mechanical support to the organs where it is present.
>Secretion: Cuboidal epithelium of digestive tract secretes digestive enzymes and endocrine glands secretes hormones.
>Absorption and excretion: In auriferous tubules they absorb water from blood and help in their excretion.
>Gamete formation: Cuboidal cells of germinal epithelium produce gametes.
They provide mechanical support presence of germinal epithelium they produces gametes (ova & sperm)
