Hint: The first election in India was held in the year 1951 after independence. It was after the first election in India, and when the government was formed, the country faced the first major test for democratic politics.

Complete answer:
The first major test for democratic politics in our country was when the political leaders faced the situation of division of states according to language i.e. division of linguistic states. This was the first major test for democracy in our country. In the year 1947, the boundaries of many States in India were changed to create new States. This was done to make sure that people who speak the same language live in the same States. But, some States were created not based on ethnicity, culture and geography and not based on the language of people. These States were Nagaland, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. Initially, when the demand for the formation of States based on the language that people spoke, was raised, many national leaders feared that it would lead to the disintegration of our country. The Central Government resisted the formation of linguistic States for a long time. But the experience has shown that the formation of linguistic states has made the country more united. It has also made the administration of India easier compared to before.

Note: Do not confuse this topic with the partition of India and Pakistan. That was not a decision taken by the leaders of our country but by the people themselves.
