Hint: We will first take out the negative sign common out of both the numbers and then add them normally and simply and now take back the negative sign to get the answer.
Complete step-by-step answer:
Here, we have two numbers – 11 and – 12 with us which are required to be added.
This can be written as ( - 11 ) + ( - 12 )
Taking out negative sign common from both the numbers we will get an expression like the following:-
$ \Rightarrow $( - 11 ) + ( - 12 ) = - { ( 11 ) + ( 12 ) }
Now, since there is no sign inside the small brackets, we can open them up normally to get:-
$ \Rightarrow $ ( - 11 ) + ( - 12 ) = - { 11 + 12 }
Adding the numbers on the right hand side, we will then get:-
$ \Rightarrow $ ( - 11 ) + ( - 12 ) = - ( 23 )
Now, if we remove the bracket, we will then obtain the following:-
$ \Rightarrow $ ( - 11 ) + ( - 12 ) = - 23
Hence, the required answer is – 23.
Note:
The students must note that two positives make positive, one positive and one negative makes negative and two negatives also make positive. Here, we had the combination of negative and positive which is leading to negative. If there would have been – 11 – ( - 12 ), then it would have been – 11 + 12 which gives us 1 eventually. And, if there would have been – 11 + ( 12 ) = - 11 + 12 which would have resulted in 1 as the final answer.
This can be summarized by – ( - a ) = a; + ( - a ) = - a and – ( + a ) = - a.
