Explain tropospheric pollution in 100 words.

Hint: Troposphere refers to the lower layer of atmosphere and pollution is the unwanted substances present in the surrounding environment. When the air surrounding us contains undesirable elements in it that are deteriorating our health then it is called tropospheric pollution.

Step by step answer:
Pollution is the presence of undesirable components that may cause a health hazard to animals, plants or humans. The lower layer of atmosphere is called troposphere and the presence of these unwanted chemicals in this layer i.e. in the air around us is tropospheric pollution. The major pollutants of the troposphere are classified into two types.
The first one includes gaseous air pollutants such as oxides of sulphur ($S{O_2}$and $S{O_3}$), nitrogen ($N{O_2}$ and NO), carbon, hydrogen sulphide and hydrocarbons.
The other category includes particulate pollutants. These are very small particles which can not be seen with naked eyes. The particulate air pollutants are dust, smoke, smog, mist and fumes etc.
The burning of fossil fuels produce oxides of sulphur and nitrogen.
Burning of hydrocarbons leads to the production of oxides of carbon. The carbon monoxide is poisonous because it can lead to the blocking of supply of oxygen to organs. Carbon dioxide leads to global warming. The particulate matter causes respiratory ailments.

Note:
These substances present in the air may react with water in presence of oxygen in the air and form nitric acid and sulphuric acid. This leads to acid rain which is dangerous for living beings. It may lead to many respiratory problems. So, these substances are called pollutants and lead to pollution.
Pollution is a general term given to the act of making air, water and soil etc. dirty or addition of unwanted harmful substances in air, water and soil etc.
