Explain the type of Indian Roads.

Hint- Adjusted according to the country's large population, India has around 4.87 kilometers (3.03 mi) of roads per 1,000 people. As of the date 31 March 2017, 63.24% of Indian roads were covered. The road network of India carries more than 65 percent of its freight and around 85 percent of passenger traffic.

Step by step solution- Roads in India are cost-efficient and also the most popular dominant mode of transport that links different regions of India. The Road network in India is said to be the second-longest in the whole world.
Indian Roads are classified into 7 types as given below-
1)National Highways – National Highways refer to the major roads connecting the capitals, ports, and important cities. The Government of India had passed the National Highways Act 1956 in order to take the responsibility of building along with maintaining the National Highways.
2)State Highways – These are the roads that connect the major cities and towns of a state. State Public Work Departments (PWD) construct and maintain the State Highways.
3)District Roads – These refer to the roads that connect major cities and large villages to the District headquarters. Zilla Parishad and P.W.D build and maintain these roads.
4)Village Roads – These roads are built as well as maintained by village panchayats only. These roads are not considered right for heavy mechanized traffic.
5)Border Roads – These roads are constructed in the Northern and North-Eastern Border Areas. These are strategic roads that are built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that was established in the year 1960.
6)International Highways -The highway roads of countries that connect with the neighboring countries are called international highways.
7)Expressways – Such are referred to as the best roads of India. In these types of roads, the entrance and exit are controlled along with the help of ramps. National Expressway Authority of India is in charge of the construction as well as maintenance of expressways in India.

Note- Roads are an important mode of transport in India.India has a network of over 5,897,671 kilometers (3,664,643 mi) of roads as of 31 March 2017. This is the second-largest road network in the world, after the United States with 6,645,709 kilometers (4,129,452 mi).
