The ABO blood group system is present in humans which contains a total of 4 types of blood groups, which are A, B, AB, and O.
They are differentiated by the antigens which are present on the surface of the red blood cell.
- Blood group A contains antigen A and antibody B.
- The blood group B contains antigen B and antibody A.
- The blood group AB contains antigen A, B, and no antibody is present in this blood group.
- Blood group O is a unique blood group that doesn't have any antigen and antibody in them.
Including the presence and absence of the Rh factor, there will be a total of eight blood groups.

- Depending on the type of the blood group system, the antigens vary and they can be amino acids, carbohydrates, and other cell receptors such as glycoproteins and glycolipids.
- O negative blood groups are known as the universal donor as they do not have any antigen for the blood group. As well as the antigen for the Rh factor is absent in this blood group makes them a donor to any blood groups.
- AB positive blood group does not have any antibodies for A, B, and Rh which makes them a universal acceptor, which means they can accept blood from any blood group without forming coagulation in the host.
