A Patwari does following main types of works:
• He measures the land to keep land records.
• He is responsible for a dome group of villages.
• He maintains and updates the records of the village regularly.
• He is responsible for organizing the collection of land revenue from the farmers.
• Patwari also maintains the map of the land and the corresponding details from the register.
• Mountains the Khasra record of the lands of all kinds.
• He gives the information regarding the plot anytime.
• He also identifies the plot of land is owned by whom.

Patwari is the Government employee at the village level. He is responsible to keep the records of land and hence to collect the land revenue at the village level. The works of the village Panchayat and Patwari are related to each other as they equally work for the problems and welfare of the villagers.
The Patwari is popular by different names in the different states. As in some villages, such officers are called Lekhpal. Also, in others, it is Kanungo or Karamchari or Village Officer etc. We will refer to them as Patwari.
