He performs an important role in setting the agenda for the deliberative and decision-making of the UN bodies and also its implementation.

The UN carries out the substantive and administrative work of the United Nations as directed by the UN bodies. These include the General Assembly, The Security Council and other organs. The Secretary-General, being the head of the Secretariat, provides overall administrative guidance. The core functions of the Secretariat are listed as follows:

- To gather and prepare background data on various issues so that government delegates can study the facts and make also make suggestions;
- To help carry out the judgments made by the different organs of the United Nations;
- To coordinate international conferences;
- To translate speeches and disseminate documents into the official languages of the UN;
- To keep the public notified about the work of the United Nations.
