Hint: The Sun will give support to most of Earth's ecosystems. Plants make chemical energy from abiotic factors which include solar energy. Chemo synthesizing bacteria generate usable chemical energy. The food energy created by the developers is passed to the consumers, scavengers, and decomposers.
Complete answer:
Energy flows through the ecosystem in only one direction. Energy is transferred from organisms at one trophic level or energy level to organisms in the other trophic level. Energy carries forward in life. The cycle of energy is related to the flow of energy through different trophic levels in an ecosystem. The present ecosystem is maintained by the cycling energy and nutrients obtained from different exterior sources. At the primary trophic level the primary producers use solar energy to make organic material through photosynthesis.
The herbivores which are present at the second trophic level use the plants as food which gives them energy. A major part of this energy is used up for the metabolic functions of these animals which includes, supporting growth of tissues, breathing, digesting food ,maintaining blood circulation and body temperature.
The carnivores at the after that trophic level usually feed on the herbivores and get energy for their nourishment and growth. If huge predators are present they still represent a higher trophic level and they feed on carnivores to get the energy. Consequently the different plants and animal species are connected to one another through food chains.
Therefore we can conclude that the flow of energy in an ecosystem is thought to be unidirectional because some energy is missing in form of heat when moving from one trophic level to next for the maintenance of homeostasis of an organism therefore each successive trophic level receive a less amount of energy as compared to the previous trophic level.
Note: The energy which is gone in the form of heat that cannot be used by organisms present in nature. The autotrophic organism is not able to use this heat energy to perform the process of photosynthesis. This is the basis that the flow of energy is unidirectional as it cannot flow in a backward direction.
