The tongue plays major roles in the perception of food (flavour). The upper surface tongue and epiglottis have taste receptors that are present on taste buds. The perception of taste is produced when a food item reacts chemically with taste receptor cells. Apart from all these, we can also guess the kind of food items the other person eats just by observing face expression and sound.
Here is an example of sound made when eating some food:
