Molecules pass through the carrier proteins in a manner similar to simple diffusion at low concentrations. However, at high solute concentrations, all of the proteins are occupied by diffusing molecules. Increasing the concentration of the solute has no effect on the rate of diffusion.

It is analogous to water flowing from a high level to a low level. if the concentration is higher, the system will try to establish the same osmotic pressure on both sides of the semipermeable membrane as soon as possible.
