Hint: Democracy is defined as the government of the people, for the people and by the people. It is considered the best form of governance.

Complete answer:
The government can be made responsible for its duties once people start taking actions against every insensitive or unworthy action that the government takes. In such cases, the government will be cautious of the work it is doing for its people. The citizens can hold protests, organise rallies, carry out various campaigns against the government to force them to respond. A democratic government is considered a legitimate government since it is elected by citizens and therefore it also enjoys the confidence of the people. People have the right to vote and choose their rulers accordingly. The universal adult franchise ensures that all people, 18 or above, are given the right to vote. This gives freedom to its citizens to participate in decision-making procedures. Democracy ensures that decision making is based on norms and procedures. Since democracy is governed by the people as well, the citizens have been vested with rights where they can challenge the government and make them accountable. Various acts and laws help a particular individual to ask for any information about government institutions. For example “Right to Information” allows the normal citizens of India to gain knowledge about various government organisations.

Note: The basic principles of democracy can be sovereignty, republicanism, protection of human rights, federalism, separation of powers and checks and balances. India has been a democracy since its independence.
