It is defined as the inability of a body to change its position itself in the absence of external force. Inertia is of three types. inertias of rest, inertia of motion and inertia of direction but here we will discuss and distinguish between inertia of motion and inertia of direction.
Inertia of motion:
When a body is in motion then it will remain in motion when an external force is applied.
This property of a body is known as inertia of motion.
For example: When a moving bus suddenly stops the passengers fall forward. This is because the lower part of the body of passengers comes to rest but because of inertia of motion the upper part of the body tends to keep on moving.
Hence passengers fall forward.
Inertia of direction:
When a body is moving in a direction then it will remain moving in the same direction until an external force is applied. This property of a body is known as inertia of direction.
For example: When a moving bus turns at a circular path in the right direction then our body falls forwards left. This is because the lower body turns in the same direction as the bus turns but our upper body tends to remain the same direction as before. As a result of it we fall in the opposite direction to the direction in which the bus takes a turn.
Note: It is important to note that the definition of inertia is the statement of first law of motion given by Newton. There are many applications of these two types of inertia in real life.
