India has a democratic form of government where people elect their representative through voting. Although the democratic form of government has been considered the best form of government, it still possesses some challenges and these challenges differ from country to country. Indian democracy too faces some major challenges. The three main challenge are:
Foundational challenge:- Foundational challenge is the first challenge faced by Indian democracy. Establishing a functional and a Sovereign state, keeping the military and controlling government away from each other and bringing down the existing non democratic regime is involved in this challenge.
Challenge of expansion:- This is the second challenge faced by Indian democracy. This challenge includes applying the basic democratic government principles across different social groups, all the regions and different institutions. It also involves extending federal principle to all the federation units, to ensure power to local governments and to include minority and women groups.
Deepening of democracy:- This is the third challenge faced by the democracy of India. Strengthening of the practices and institutions of democracy is involved in this challenge. The institutions that help in participation of people and control, this challenge simply means to strengthen those institutions. Since, common people from different societies have different expectations from democracy therefore, in different parts of the world this challenge takes different paths and meanings
Note: In addition to these three main challenges, Indian democracy faces some more prevalent challenges like healthcare, overpopulation, poverty, low literacy rate, gender and caste discrimination and unemployment. Unemployment remains one of the major challenges to the Indian democracy.
