Transgender is a person whose gender does not match the gender assigned to him at birth. It is an umbrella term which is used to define those persons whose gender is different from the sex assigned to him at birth. The term transsexual is more specific and comes under the transgender umbrella. An example of transgender is that a person who was assigned female at birth and has a male sense of self is categorised as transgender. Transsexual is not an umbrella term like the transgender. Transsexual people are those whose gender identity is inconsistent and feels that they belong to the opposite sex. They also have a desire to assume and accept the physical characteristics of the desired gender. A person who is transsexual has a strong desire to transform one’s anatomical gender.

Note: In India, the Parliament passed the Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Bill in 2019. The Bill explains the provisions on the basis of which it prohibits discrimination against a transgender person. It deals with the denial of service, education, employment, healthcare or unfair treatment of the transgender people and prohibits any actions of discrimination.
