The pulmonary artery arises from the right ventricle of the heart. As it leaves the heart, the pulmonary trunk forks in two directions –the left and right pulmonary artery. The left and right pulmonary artery branches carry the deoxygenated blood to the left and right lungs respectively. There, the blood is combined with oxygen and pumped back into the heart through the pulmonary veins. This oxygenated blood rushes into the left atrium of the heart and is pumped to the left ventricle, and then eventually distributed through the aorta into the arteries which supply the oxygen-rich blood throughout the entire body.
