What is the difference between resistance and reactance?
Hint: Reactance has the same notion as of resistance in electrical circuits and it also has the same unit that is Ohms ($\Omega $ ). Reactance only occurs during a change of current in inductors and capacitors. That's the reason why, reactance depends on the frequency of the alternating current through an inductor or capacitor. Resistance is the opposition to the flow to current. It opposes the free flow of electrons making the electrons flow slowly thus current decreases.
Difference between resistance and reactance are:
Resistors react to both alternating current and direct current. It acts in both the power source.
Inductors and Capacitors respond to variations of currents or alternating current only.
This obstacle to the current from resistors is known as resistance.
This obstacle to the current inductors and capacitors are known as electrical impedance (Z).
Resistance has a simple value.
Impedance is a complex value in mathematical analysis that means it has two parts, one real part and an imaginary part. The real part of this number is called resistance and the imaginary part is called impedance (Z).
Resistance can only be brought by a resistor.
For reactance all three resistor, inductor and capacitor are needed.
Note: Resistance and reactance are the properties of an electrical circuit that opposes the current. The main difference between reactance and resistance is that resistance measures the opposition to a flow of current, whereas reactance measures the opposition to a change in current.
