Hint: Verb is an action word that tells us about action, time of the action or just the state of being. Both gerund and participles are forms of verbs that are not used as verbs.
Examples: Jump, run, Do, go etc.

Complete answer:

BasisGerundParticiple
DefinitionA gerund is a form of the verb which acts as a noun in a sentenceA participle is a form of the verb which acts as an adjective or tense or verb phrase. In the case where it (usually past participles) acts as a phrase, it will be used along with an auxiliary form of the verb (be, do, have). Present and past participles take action verbs to function as action verbs.
Types Gerunds are 2 types 1)Subject Gerund 2) Object gerund. As a subject gerund, a gerund can be used as a subject complement and main subject in a sentence and an object gerund as the object in a clause/sentence.Participles are of two types 1) Present participle 2) Past participle. As a present participle, the participle will be given in -ing form, mostly used in active voice. As a past participle, the participle will be given in ed, en etc. type of form, mostly used in passive voice.
UseGerunds can be used as a subject, an object and they can also be used as a subject complement or an object of a prepositionParticiples are used after a noun or main verb or before a noun to modify verbs, nouns, noun phrases and verb phrases in a sentence.
ExamplesE.g. of gerund 1) Playing makes the body fit and healthy. 2) He is keen on horse riding. E.g. of the Participle 1) She saw him standing there. 2) The students are excited.

Note:
- Gerund and participles along with infinitives are known as verbals.
- Sentences framed with gerunds will never have punctuation marks and will always have a main verb.
- It is not necessary for the words in the past participle form to have ‘-ed’ added to the main verb because past forms of irregular verbs take different forms.
