Hint: 1)1914-1918 was the duration of World War I. It was a war fought to end all the other wars.
2)It involved almost the whole of Europe and a few Asian countries.
3)It left behind a devastating effect on many countries.

Complete answer:
The US stayed away from World War one till the beginning of 1917. In 1917, the German forces attacked the United States naval forces. To retaliate, the US entered into world war I.

The major factor was the location of the US. Geographically, it was far away from the focal point of the war, that is Europe and Asia. The US military felt it was not required to get involved unnecessarily.
Also, they were not sure if the Allies and their power. They assumed that the Allies were weak and lacked strategic planning. So, the United States was skeptical about allying with them.

Roosevelt was advised by Joseph Kennedy to refrain from getting involved in the war. And even if at all they decide to enter the war they should ally with Germany only.

The American industrialists hated news and supported Nazi views. All these conflicting ideas made the United States stay out of WWI.

Note: The assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his pregnant wife Sophie was the immediate cause of World War I.

The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese military was the immediate cause of the US entering WWII. The consequence was the US dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
