Complete answer: Grasshoppers are a group of insects that belong to the suborder Caelifera. Grasshoppers are the most ancient living group of chewing herbivorous insects. They possess powerful hind legs that allow them to escape from danger by leaping vigorously. They are mostly ground-dwelling insects. Grasshoppers are mostly polyphagous and eat vegetation from multiple plant sources. Although they eat plants, there are some species of grasshoppers that are omnivorous in nature and depend on animal tissue and animal feces for their food. The digestive system of grasshoppers is the same as that of one of the insects. It consists of a malpighian tubule which discharges into the midgut. The muscular part of the digestive system called the gizzard is the site of the grinding of food in grasshoppers. It is a pouch-like structure that forms the lower part of the stomach. Its main purpose is the grinding of food with a chitinous plate. Mainly digestion of carbohydrates takes place in the crop and digestion of proteins takes place in ceca of midgut.

Note: The gizzard is not only found in grasshoppers but also found in many birds and insects. Its sole function is to grind the food that is breaking down into tiny pieces. In addition to it, we should also know that grasshoppers are consumed as food in many countries.
