The Indian worm-gear roller gin which was invented during the 16th century has remained unchanged even today. In the year 1794, an American inventor by the name Eli Whitney introduced a modern mechanical cotton gin which uses a combination of a wire screen and small wire hooks to pull the cotton through, while the brushes continuously removes the loose cotton lint to prevent jams.

This cotton engine by Whitney has revolutionized the cotton industry in the United States but also led to the growth of slavery in South America as the demand for cotton harvesting rapidly increased. The invention has thus been identified as an inevitable contributing factor which led to the outbreak of the American Civil War.At present times, modern automated cotton gins use multiple powered cleaning cylinders and saws and offer far higher productivity than their hand-powered predecessor.

Note: In modern cotton production, cotton is brought at the industrial cotton gins either in trailers or in compressed rectangular modules weighing around 10 metric tons. The cotton arriving at the gin is then sucked in by a pipe by swinging over the cotton.
