This battle was fought between the army of Maratha under Shivaji and General Kartalab Khan of the Mughal Empire. This is a great example of guerrilla warfare. The Marathas defeated the Mughal forces. Aurangzeb, Shahista Khan ordered Kartalab Khan and Rai Began to attack Raj gad Fort. The men of Shivaji encountered both of them in a forest at the hills of a mountain that place was called the Umberkhind. When Aurangzeb sat on the throne in the year 1659, he announced Shaista Khan as the Viceroy of the Deccan, and he sent him with numerous Mughal army to enforce the treaty the Mughalhas signed with the Adilshahi of Bijapur. In the month of January 1660, Shaista Khan arrived at Aurangabad and start seizing the Pune. The fort of Chakan and Kalyan and north Konkan all are captured by him after heavy fighting with the Marathas. The Marathas were then banned from entering the Pune city. Kartalab Khan and Rai Began started to assist Shaista Khan in his campaign. Later, both Kartalab Khan and Rai Began are sent by Shaista Khan to capture the Raj gad Fort.
