How did Brazil achieve independence?

But the political events in the wake of this call for independence lasted from 1821 to 1825 which involved a series of wars and disputes between the Brazlian Empire and the Portugese. The formal recognition from Portugal came after the treaty in 1825.

Complete answer: The land of Brazil had been under the dominion of the Portugese since the 1500 when it was found and claimed by them. The colonists, like in other places, brought with them many diseases that the native population was not immune to. After the settlements came up in this territory, abundance of resources were found and trade began from this colony.

During the Napoelenic wars in the 1800s, the king of Brazil had shifted his throne from Portugal to Brazil. This technically made Brazil the capital now where the seat of power resided. Thus, the settlers were very pleased with the rule. But after the Napoelenic wars were over, the throne shifted back to Portugal.

To keep the settlers in Brazil satisfied, the king appointed Pedro II to rule Brazil. Pedro II took this opportunity to declare Brazil as an independent empire in its own right and became the ruler of the new kingdom. This was met with retaliation from Portugese side but in 1825 with the signing of peace treaty, Brazil came into existence independently.

Note: The Treaty of Rio de Janeiro is the one which was signed between the Portugese Kingdom and the Empire of Brazil in 1824. It brought an end to the war of independence and all hostilities and established the free states.
