Hint: Due to this new COVID virus many of us have seen a modified version of this instrument which uses infrared light to measure temperature of our body. It is also more precise and works without direct contact.
Complete step by step answer:
Pyrometer is a type of non-contact instrument also called an infrared or radiation thermometer which is used to measure the temperature of an object’s surface by using radiation which is coming out of that object.
These are generally used for industrial purposes where actual contact is not at all possible and a precise reading is needed. The principle behind working of a pyrometer is it measures how much of intensity of radiation is being emitted from a particular object, this captured radiation is then sent to a detector who responds on the basis of the amount of radiation emitted and finally converts that energy in temperature form. Latest edition of pyrometer is also capable of measuring the temperature of cooler objects as well by detecting their infrared flux.
Broadly pyrometer can be classified in two different types:
A) Optical Pyrometers
B) Radiation/Infrared Pyrometers
Basic application of pyrometer is in:
A) Measuring top of Hot air balloon
B) Blast furnaces for smelting industries
C) Measuring turbine blade temperature
D) Recording temperature of moving objects
Note: Although it has many advantages and very widely accepted it has its own disadvantages as well.
Disadvantage:
1) Cost is one of the major factors to any industry.
2) Different conditions like radiation, dust etc hampers the accuracy of the device.
